Clearance Diving Team 3 is the RAN's operational diving team formed only for active service
in a theatre of war.
When the 8th team returned from Vietnam in May 1971, the Australian Naval Board disbanded CDT3
with the proviso "to be reformed" at their discretion.
CDT3 has been "reformed" on 2 subsequent occasions - for operational service in the first Gulf war in Kuwait and the recent war in Iraq. On both occasions CDT3 has served with distinction, upholding the proud traditions of CDT3 Vietnam, the Clearance Diving Branch and the Royal Australian Navy.
Clearance Divers also served with distinction in East Timor.
A touching verse written for CDT3 by a crew member of HMAS Perth (while she was serving on the 'Gunline') was presented to the 8th Team in Da Nang by a visiting Navy Chaplain. It has since been adopted by the CD Branch as the "Diver's prayer".
"O God in Heaven, hear our plea
for Clearance Divers 'neath the sea.
While in the ocean's dark embrace
keep us thy sons within Thy Grace
And hear us Lord, O Thou who saves,
for us Thy servants 'neath the waves."

"In the creeks and swamps of the Rung Sat and along the Cua Viet the fishermen have returned. Sometimes in the tree roots or sandbars they find shattered wood and twisted metal fragments: sampans, junks, patrol boats, helicopters..... The young boys listen to the recollections of their grandfathers, of the old days when the foreigners fought the Vietnamese in these very streams, rivers and bays."

It may surprise some to discover the number of gallantry awards made to the Royal Australian Navy during the Vietnam War.
Based on number of gallantry awards received as a percentage of the number who people who served in those units, the NAVY detachment of 8 pilots attached to 9 Squadron RAAF tops the list for the Australian Military with 37.5% receiving gallantry awards (perhaps not a fair benchmark).
The RAN Helicopter Flight received 20.9%.
CDT3 received 14.3%.
By comparison, the Australian Army's most decorated unit, the Australian Army Training Team (AATTV) received 9% (including 4 Victoria Crosses).
